If you had to move to a country besides the one you currently live in, where would you move and why?

I suppose I would choose to live in Israel. There is a feeling of “home” there if you are Jewish, though the way of life is very different from the United States. The bureaucracy there is a tangled web, things we take for granted having here are not so easily gotten there. The land is beautiful.

What color would you like your bedroom to be?

Just the color it is! We redid our bedroom many years ago, choosing wallpaper for the walls instead of paint. It is shades of blue. I love the bedding I chose and made curtains to match. I still love it though it is many years ago.

What makes you Happy? Make a list of things in your life that bring you joy.

The amateur orchestra my husband practices violin with in NYC found upon arriving at the studio on Sunday, there was no available room for them to practice in. I suggested they take it outdoors to an open sitting area a block away which is what the group did. The people sitting in the area enjoyed the impromptu concert, and it was one of those “only in New York” moments.

What do you consider is the most perfect food for you? (It can be your favorite food to something extremely healthy.)

I am gluten intolerant and stopped eating sugar for health reasons. No carbs, no sugar, what’s perfect?  My favorite go to meal is a salad with strawberries and almonds in it topped with a piece of grilled salmon.

Are you focused on today or tomorrow?

Both. I’m always looking ahead, I wouldn’t say focused, but planning ahead in terms of appointments and if something special is coming up. As I am getting older I do find I am thinking more about the tomorrows- and the lack of any guarantee of them-especially since friends have died suddenly and have lost their tomorrows, bringing it to the forefront of my mind.

If you could interview one of your great-great-great grandparents, who would it be (if you know their name) and what would you ask?

My maternal great grandmother was a seamstress and pattern maker. We do not know who came before her, it was said she was an orphan, so I would be interested in meeting her to find out. She died at the age of 54 from undiagnosed and untreated diabetes.

I appreciated being off from school and seeing the sunrise instead of missing it because I needed to rush to get ready.

If you were given the opportunity to ride in a helicopter would go?

NO WAY!!! I haven’t been on an airplane in 10 years- the thought of being in a helicopter, so confined, so high up- forget it!!!

What are some of your favorite type of proteins to eat? (meat, seafood, eggs, soy, cheese, nuts)

I love cheese, nuts, and salmon. I eat chicken but usually only once a week, and red meat maybe twice a year.

What would be your preference, awake before dawn, at dawn, or awake before noon?

Before dawn or at dawn is usually when I get up. In the summer I am usually up before sunrise and love that quiet time with my coffee and the silence of the world. My very favorite thing to do is watch the sunrise over the ocean.

What is your favorite outdoor activity?

Walking and taking photographs of the nature around me- especially the birds.

In a car would you rather drive or be a passenger?

I prefer to be the passenger but sometimes when the ride is too boring would rather be driving so I am engaged rather than sitting scrolling through my phone. We crossed the new Kosciuszko Bridge from Brooklyn last week,  the bridge is the first of several bridges citywide to feature an advanced lighting system—part of Governor Cuomo’s “New York Harbor of Lights” initiative—which allows the bridge to display a light show. The lights actually keep changing colors!

If you could have three wishes granted for you alone, what would they be?

Healthy, healthy and healthy

I am inspired everyday by the teacher I work with, witnessing his ability to reach each child through kindness and understanding. I was especially inspired when a student he taught last year came into the class to visit this week. This student had been in my first grade class 2 years ago and was a challenge to work with. Disconnected, unable to keep up, broke the rules often and it seemed no matter what we did, how differentiated we made a lesson, he was always in opposition. He went to 2nd grade and had the teacher I now work with. To say this child has completely turned around is an understatement, and if I hadn’t witnessed it with my own eyes would not believe it. The teacher I am now with told me what he needed was for someone to really believe in him, and for the child to know it. This teacher was able to reach this child with subtle constant encouragement, letting the child know he believed in him. It changed him not only academically but in how he interacts with his peers and adults.

What would constitute a “perfect” day for you?

Waking up, for starters, and then watching the sunrise over the ocean as I did on Monday.

Complete this sentence: My favorite place in the whole world…..

Home first, then the beach

Who was your best friend in elementary school (prior to age 12)?

Lauri- she lived 2 houses away and we were inseparable. By the time we were teenagers we went separate ways, hung out with different crowds. We reconnected a few years ago on Facebook and got together which was really nice.

Share Your World: Emilio Style

This week, sitting in for Cee, is Emilio over at Photos By Emilio. He is asking the questions for Share Your World, So here we go:

Have you ever been pulled over by a cop?

My first speeding ticket EVER was 11 years ago when I was in my late 40’s. I was driving a Mini Cooper at the time and sometimes found myself going a bit faster than I should – and on a local highway there sat a cop who pulled me over. I always cry when I am scared, that’s just how I roll, and this time was no different. He was very nice when he approached and saw me crying already, and when he came back to my car after checking my ID he said he couldn’t believe I had NO violations on my record EVER. He wrote the ticket for only going 15 miles above the speed limit, when in truth I had been going 40-yes, 40 miles over the speed limit-well it was a highway- telling me it would result in less points on my record. I ended up going to court and paying more than what the actual cost of the ticket was, because this way there would be no points on my record at all.

What have you always wanted?  Did you get it?

I can’t really think of anything that I really wanted and didn’t get, as spoiled as that may sound. I started working in my teens so if I wanted something my parents did not think was a necessity I would buy it myself. I bought my first car when I was 21, using money I had saved and taking a loan from a local bank. I am grateful for the things in my life that I have.

What is your perfect pizza?

Ah pizza- being gluten intolerant for close to 18 years I have forgotten pizza. I have tried gluten free but it is pretty awful. People have recommended Cauliflower crust pizza- also not a substitute. My favorite was with lots of cheese, and a cheese filled crust too.

This week 511 cyclists rode 180 miles over 2 days through 3 states, to raise money for an organization called Chai Lifeline. Chai Lifeline provides seriously and chronically ill children and their families with support and encouragement during illness. For two weeks of every summer, hundreds of children are granted the ultimate camp experience in Camp Simcha, returning home with renewed hope, determination, and the thrill of simply being a child rather than a patient.

As a volunteer in a local hospital and also having had a friend who benefitted from Chai Lifeline’s services, I can attest to the fact that it is an amazing organization that is there in every way possible for families going through unbelievably trying times when a child is sick with cancer. The riders this year raised  a whopping $8,371,703.61. I followed the riders on Instagram this year and watched the video as they rode into Camp Simcha after travelling all those miles to greet the campers. It was very moving. Here’s a glimpse of the ride.

This week Cee asks:

When you leave a room, do you turn the lights off behind you or keep the lights on throughout your house most of the time?

I always turn the lights off when I leave a room. I do have some lights set on timers so I don’t come into a dark house at night, or if we are away the lights go on and off.

What do you feel is the most enjoyable way to spend $500?

I’ll admit it, I would go on a shopping spree for clothes. I love to shop, I love to find the best price for what I am buying so I would stretch that $500 pretty far. I am convinced I inherited this passion from my father, who always felt the money was burning a hole in his pocket, also had a love for clothes, and lived with the motto “you can’t take it with you.”
