TGIF!!!!

I can’t help taking things to heart, getting upset at how unkind someone can be, not being able to wrap my head around how someone can stay so rooted in the same place not being able to ever step outside their neat little black and white world, leaving no room for the gray areas. Especially when it comes to children, where the world needs to be flexible sometimes, where things don’t always work out as they are supposed to, where bending to work around a situation is necessary. I have come to believe that being unkind has to be one of the worst traits a person can possess. Mean runs a close second, but just being unkind and unfeeling is something I have no tolerance for. This week presented many challenges for me in the classroom, witnessing unkindness to 6 year olds, something I cannot fathom. That would have been bad enough but the teacher actually dragged me into- or I should say attempted to drag me into her unkindess by asking me to agree with what she had said to a student- in front of the whole class- to which I gave a contrary reply. Yes I went to speak to our administrator  about the two incidents, telling her I felt I would be complicit in her behavior if I did not, that I felt it an obligation to let her know what had gone on. Both incidents were verbal, inappropriate and made both children feel bad. All could have been avoided if this teacher  allowed herself to be flexible, allowed herself to feel kindness and understanding for the needs of a 6 year old. In any case as soon as I got home today I ventured out into the windy frigid cold of the day to air out and take in nature. What luck to walk into my favorite park and look up at a tree that holds a nesting box to see thisdscn8700

Feathers on Friday: Yellow Bellied Sapsucker

I spotted a bird way up in a tree last week and even zooming in could not identify him. After taking a closer look on the computer I saw he had a beautiful red throat and googled what kind of bird it could be. I was pleased to find out it was a Yellow Bellied Sapsucker- a type of Woodpecker. I had never seen one before!

Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers lap up the leaking sap and any trapped insects with its specialized, brush-tipped tongue. They are mostly black and white with boldly patterned faces. Both sexes have red foreheads, and males also have red throats. Bold black-and-white stripes curve from the face toward a black chest shield and white or yellowish underparts.

Here is is hanging out- literally and munching on the berries on a branchyellowbelliedsapsuckerhanging

He kept moving around the tree so I was only able to get a few shots , and not very clear ones.dscn8445

Thursday’s Special: Pick A Word

Paula has invited us to pick a word this week. From the choices she has given us I have chosen two. Aquatic and Amiable.

Aquatic: of or relating to water ie: animal or plant. Amiable: having or displaying a friendly and pleasant manner.

This little lady duck proved not only to be aquatic, but also quite amiable dscn7200

She climbed right out of the water and brought some friends to eat directly from my hand. Quite amiable I thought.20160711_111305-2

Faded

I awoke this morning to the terrible news that Easy, a Weimaraner whose blog I have been following for years, died last night. Through the blog written by his mom but from the perspective of Easy, I have laughed at their antics and cried when life handed them lemons. Though they live across the world from me in France, sharing our lives through our blogs we came to know each other and kept in contact through email off the blogs. This is one of the great things about blogging- we open ourselves up and make connections with people we would never have been able to otherwise. Though Easy has faded from life with us, he lives on in our hearts, and will do so in the many hearts he touched through his blog. My heart aches for my friends as I know the pain of losing a beloved pet, and especially so quickly and unexpectedly as was the case with Easy.

Sharing My World

Do you prefer eating foods with nuts or no nuts?

Depends upon what I am eating. I love nuts added to a salad to give it a crunch. Pistachio crusted Salmon is delicious too!

If someone made a movie of your life would it be a drama, a comedy, a romantic-comedy, action film, or science fiction?

Oh I think it would be drama and comedy all rolled up in one.

Who talks real sense to you?

My husband. My voice of reason.

Do you have a favorite board game?

I do not like board games at all, I am not competitive and always disliked playing games. My game of choice is Mah Jongg which I LOVE playing. Mahjong1

If We Were Having Coffee….

I would invite you in because it is pretty chilly out there! The sky is clear blue, but it is deceiving when you step outside the door. I did go for an early morning walk spotting these early birds.. you know the saying…..

Two of our great nieces (they are cousins) came Friday morning to stay over as they have every Thanksgiving weekend for the past 7 years. We spend Friday shopping and getting frozen yogurt and going out for lunch. They are 15 years old now and I am glad they still look forward to coming even though they are teenagers. One of them told me she is “very into tradition” and loves that we have this weekend “tradition.” I was glad to hear it.

We even had some old time fun and stepped into a photo booth in the mall20161125_123630

Saturday night we went to a pottery painting place and allowed our creativity to flow- each of us painting and getting lost in our designs

Building relationships with my nieces is important to me – we keep in touch throughout the year but there is nothing like spending time alone with them. They know they are always welcome to share ideas or what is on their mind, and know that whatever they tell me stays with me. I have watched them grow from little girls into young women, encountering the difficulties that young girls face with friends, school and with family. They don’t need to explain any background- as I have known their mothers, my nieces, from the time they were teenagers too.

Now I need to get back to the reality of life, the laundry, the vacuuming and maybe a third cup of coffee- I hope you have enjoyed your weekend too!

Feathers on Friday-The Weekly Smile

I was walking along the bank of a local river Thanksgiving morning when I spotted a bird fly across the water and land on some branches near the water’s edge. I zoomed in and spotted a bird I had never seen before. It was a great distance as it was across the river from where I stood so I was not able to get photos as clear as I would have liked. It was also very overcast so the lack of light didn’t help and I was more intent on capturing a few shots before he took flight than figuring out how to do something about the lack of light. (Marilyn where were you when I needed you???) I got home and googled a description of this bird and found it was a female Belted Kingfisher.

According some of the bird websites: The belted kingfisher is the only member of the Kingfisher group commonly found in the northern United States and Canada. Unlike most birds where the male is more dominantly colored, this kingfisher shows sexual dimorphism, with the female more brightly coloured than the male. Both sexes have a slate blue head, large white collar, a large blue band on the breast, and white underparts. The back and wings are slate blue with black feather tips with little white dots. The female features a rufous band across the upper belly that extends down the flanks. It nests in burrows along earthen banks and feeds almost entirely on aquatic prey, diving to catch fish and crayfish with its heavy, straight bill.

My smile for the week was spotting this never seen before by me bird- and a real beauty at that!beltedkingfisheronbranch

Giving Thanks

I walked for two hours Thanksgiving morning, leaving just after the sun rose. It was cloudy and the forecast called for rain later in the day so I wanted to head out early. I visited my favorite local trails and took in the beauty around me, thinking of the friends no longer on this Earth who are unable to do so. Thinking of their families without them today. I almost welcomed the cold as it hit my face, thankful to feel it, thankful my legs could carry me for two hours of walking, thankful my eyes could see the birds and the last of the leaves changing color. Thanksgiving means something different to all of us- for some it is sitting down to a meal with family, eating traditional fare. Today I thought back to those traditional Thanksgivings of my childhood, lost to the passage of time and family moving away or becoming estranged. I am thankful for the good in my life, the good people and friends in my life, and all that comes with that. Not just on the last Thursday of November, but everyday. That’s what Thanksgiving means to me.tree

Memory

Memory: the faculty by which the mind stores and remembers information.

Something remembered from the past; a recollection.

It is funny how something can trigger a memory, remind us of a time from our past, remind us of someone we loved who is gone. I attended a concert at a local library on Sunday, a trio consisting of violin, piano and cello, who played 2 selections of classical music. It was a lovely hour spent listening and watching these talented musicians. When they finished they decided to do an encore, and at the first chords of the piano I knew what it was. The song Memory from the musical Cats. This song will forever be entwined with memories of my father, who got tickets for the show when it first opened in October of 1982. His favorite song was Memory, not just for the beauty of the music, but the words resonated with him too. He was a sentimental man and easily moved by music.

At the first chords I could feel a catch in my throat and my eyes fill with tears- all in a split second. Thinking of my father, remembering his excitement at getting those tickets, and just remembering him.

Those gone from our lives remain within us forever-and though it made me sad I was happy for the good memories and the music bringing my father to mind.

The Weekly Smile

This was a busy week with little extra time it seemed for anything other than work. I did go shopping with my BFF Thursday night and bought a new pair of shoes and a pair of booties that I just love.

What really made me smile was seeing these wonderful images of a woman who has taken bird houses to a whole new level. She makes them out of a cardboard box and decorates the interior like a real home. She attaches them to her window with heavy tape and  then films them flying in and out. I just love it. Read about it and see it here
