Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Fire Trucks-Fire Houses

I was walking up 8th Avenue in New York City,  passing a fire station between 47th & 48th streets. The Fire engines were right there in front and the windshield of one caught my eye-

I stopped to take a few photos and suddenly felt someone behind me taking my phone out of my hands. One of the firefighters said “go stand by the other truck I’ll take your photo.” I started to laugh and asked if he was for real, and with that another firefighter stepped over and said, “I’ll get in the photo with you.” OK with me!

I found out later that “The Pride of Manhattan” Engine 54, Ladder 4, Battalion 9 Firehouse lost 15 firefighters on 9/11 — an entire shift and more than any other New York Firehouse. The 15 men killed had 28 children between them. It is the busiest firehouse in NYC answering 14,000 calls a year, and also the most visited firehouse in NYC.

Tell Me Something Good-Weekly Smile

A Momma’s View says: Let’s kick off this week on a positive note. By sharing something good, something that made you happy or you are looking forward to .

So I’ll combine Trent’s Weekly Smile along with a Momma’s View and share what made me happy and smiley this past week.

My niece became engaged! Actually she is my great niece, and a great niece she is! She just passed her Nursing Boards and a few days later became engaged. She calls herself the Nurse Bride now.

The family got together to celebrate, where a good time was had by all. I saw two of my other great nieces, whom I have written about before, one is the Bride’s sister, the other a cousin. They are both 15 and we always have fun when we get together. So next step is the upcoming wedding in September, time to go shopping for a dress!

Here’s the Bride to Be and her 3 sisters- they are a very close knit bunch. The Bride is 2nd from the right.and here are my other nieces, we never miss the opportunity to take a selfie when we’re together

Now it’s your turn to tell me something good, and what made you smile this week!

Weekly Weather: Fog

I love the fog. Standing in it one is not sure where things begin and end, it lends a pervasive sense of calm and mystery over wherever it is. Who doesn’t think of Carl Sandburg when seeing it, or being surrounded by it?

The fog comes
on little cat feet.
It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.

Weekend Coffee Share

Good Morning! Come inside, it’s a bit muggy and overcast today, but at least the heat wave seems to have come to an end. Not that I minded- I happen to love the summer and don’t mind the heat at all. I’ve been on vacation since school ended in June, and enjoying my free time to catch up on things. I’ve been walking everyday, and last week took my camera along to a local park. Early morning is my favorite time of day, I’ll share some of my photos with you over coffee.

I am always on the lookout for birds and spotted a few along the way.

A Warbler- they are so tiny and fast I was happy to catch this one. Then two Goldfinches. People stopped as they saw me standing on the path taking pictures, amazed at their bright yellow color, and saying they would never have noticed them had I not been standing there. All you need to do is look around, there is so much to see!A Mockingbird seemed to be doing a dance on the path, trying to attract a mate I assumed.Success!

A Monarch Butterfly lingered long enough for me to watch him

As did this Swallowtail

And a Cloudless Sulphur

Always thrilled to capture a glimpse of a Great Blue Heron- this one was walking along looking for breakfastAnd this Cormorant was out catching the early sunBy this this time the sun was out in full force and I decided to head home to the errands that awaited me. I have been enjoying meeting friends for coffee and the slow pace of summer. And of course the ocean, where we have been going every week. I enjoy coloring while sitting looking and listening to the ocean waves, and the seagulls all around.

I highly recommend both the ocean and the coloring as means to completely relax and forget whatever else is going on your life!

Well I have enjoyed sharing my photos with you and catching up but the day is calling! Hope you are having a lovely weekend and doing whatever makes you happy!

Feathers on Friday: Osprey

From All About Birds: Unique among North American raptors for its diet of live fish and ability to dive into water to catch them, Ospreys are common sights soaring over shorelines, patrolling waterways, and standing on their huge stick nests, white heads gleaming. These large, rangy hawks do well around humans and have rebounded in numbers following the ban on the pesticide DDT. Ospreys are very large, distinctively shaped hawks. Despite their size, their bodies are slender, with long, narrow wings and long legs. They fly with a marked kink in their wings, making an M-shape when seen from below. Their length21.3–22.8 in (54–58 cm)and wingspan59.1–70.9 in (150–180 cm)

A pair of Ospreys chose a local cell phone tower in town to build their nest, and I had the pleasure of catching sight of them there this week. The tower is located across the street from a marsh and river, making it a perfect place to take up residence and find meals.

I stood below the the tower to capture these photos- their clarity is not the best because of the height distance and the sun. But I still felt they were worth sharing.

The nest is on the right side of the tower.

You can see the “kink” in the wings while in flight

Thursday Doors

Thursday Doors is a weekly feature allowing door lovers to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos from around the world, hosted by Norm 2.0 . Feel free to join in on the fun by creating your own Thursday Doors post each week and then sharing it, between Thursday morning and Saturday noon.

These doors were taken in Montclair, New Jersey at the Howard Van Vleck House. Built in 1916 by Joseph Van Vleck, Jr, it recalls the classic architectural style of a Mediterranean villa. Joseph built it for his brother Charles who lived there until his death in 1923.

Black & White Sunday: After & Before

Paula’s Black & White Sunday invites us to post the same image both in black and white and in colour. AFTER and BEFORE -the topic and subject are entirely arbitrary. The only condition is that we post an image captured in colour and that we turn it monochrome in post processing.

I found the details in the black & white stood out more for me. I hadn’t noticed the whistle in his hand, or the stripes on her cap.

Naturally the color is more vivid, and there is a lot of color with the umbrellas, but the sky was cloudy and washed out, which lent itself to the black & white version.

What is your favorite cheese?

I love cheese- any kind of cheese. Feta is a favorite in salads. Cheddar is good with anything. Muenster on a rice cake…you name it, I’ll eat it.

Are you left or right handed?

Right handed, but I can put nail polish on my right hand using my left. It wasn’t until I broke my elbow 5 years ago that I realized just how much I relied on my left hand.

Do you prefer exercising your mind or your body? How frequently do you do either?

I like to do both. For the mind I like to do crossword puzzles and finally figured out Sudoku, and love learning how to do new things on the computer. I exercise my body every day, I run/walk 2 miles or more a day. I used to belong to a gym but working full time I found I could not get there- too tired after work or too rushed in the morning, so I quit. I prefer being outside anyway.

Complete this sentence: Hot days are …

My favorites! I have no tolerance for cold anymore and always welcome summer with open arms. The humidity is a killer but I’ll still take it over cold and snow! But I do love the ocean any season.

Thursday’s Special: Traces of the Past

Traces of the Past is a recurrent photo challenge that happens every month. Paula says we are free to choose whatever traces of the past we can find. It does not have to be a distant one, or rich in history; it can be something personal, or it can even have a human form.

Old Westbury Gardens, located Long Island in New York, is the former estate of John Shaffer Phipps (1874–1958), heir to a U.S. Steel fortune. Work on the estate began in 1903, when John Shaffer Phipps promised his British fiancée Margarita he would build her a home in the United States that resembled her family estate in Battle Abbey, UK. The estate was ready for Phipps, his wife and their children in 1906.  The mansion contains 23 rooms, and the grounds cover 160 acres. Below is Mrs. Phipps bathroom. In my opinion a very elegant trace of the past.

The Weekly Smile

I have pretty much been smiling since school let out at the end of June. You would think I would have more time to catch up on reading the many blogs I follow and writing and participating in the photo challenges I love. Somehow that has not been the case. I have been meeting friends for coffee, catching up on taking care of things around the house, and food shopping on no particular schedule as when I am working. The beach is what makes me smile the most, and here is some of why. What made you smile this week?

The Suit Fund

When I saw the prompt Tailor for today, a post I wrote a few years ago came immediately to mind. I am re posting it for today’s prompt.

The letter arrived in the mail the other day. Just as it has in countless mailboxes for the last 60 years. Every year before the Jewish holiday of Passover the letter arrives from the parochial elementary school my husband attended, with a request for a donation to the “Suit Fund.” The donations are used to buy new suits before the holiday, for the boys whose families cannot afford to do so. My husband was one of those boys back in 1956.

My husband was 10 years old when his father died. It was sudden and with no warning. His father had gone into the hospital with a kidney problem, nothing life threatening. My husband and his mother had gone to visit him in the afternoon, he remembers his father joking and kidding as he always did. Four hours later they got a phone call saying he had died. He had been given some kind of injection that had caused a heart attack. He was 46 years old. Today there would be malpractice suits, and investigations, but the year was 1956 and there was none of that happening. What was happening was a young mother of 36 was left with 2 sons ages 17 and 10 and alot of grief. She and her husband had opened a retail dry goods store in Brooklyn just a year before, which fortunately meant there would be some income. But not much. My husband remembers being left alone in the store once a week when his mother had to go to New York City to buy merchandise from the wholesalers. If someone asked for something that he couldn’t find he would tell them, “Please come back tomorrow when my mother is here.” He was 12.

So he was one of the boys who would be a recipient of the Suit Fund. He and six other boys would pile into the Principal’s Car and head off from Brooklyn to Manhattan’s Lower East Side to get new suits. It was handled in a very discreet manner, but he said he remembers feeling a bit embarrassed, knowing that being one of the boys who got a suit this way did set him apart. Once at the store they could pick out whatever they wanted, it was then tailored to fit, and they all got a new shirt and tie too. He made this trip for a new suit from 4th grade until 8th grade when he graduated.

There are events that happen in our lives that change us, shape us, define who we will become. Experiencing the death of a parent at a young age is one of those events. The ramifications run deep and are far reaching. It set my husband apart from the other boys in his class, but at the same time made him more aware of the needs of others, more sensitive to the hardships people can experience that come about not because of anything they have done, but because of circumstances beyond their control.

My husband has given to the suit fund from the day he began working, close to 50 years ago. Every year as he writes out that check, he is reminded of the blessings in his life, and thankful that he is able to give back. Knowing that a young boy will feel good about having a new suit to wear on the holiday, just as he did.

Feathers on Friday: Oystercatcher

Last week while sitting near the shoreline at the beach, I heard a squawking that caught my attention. I looked up to see a bird with a long red bill running along in the surf. This was no Seagull. I grabbed my camera and walked closer to the edge of the water to capture some shots.

This beautiful bird is called an Oystercatcher. It is specialized in feeding on bivalves (oysters, clams, and mussels) and uses its brightly colored bill to get at them. Seen along the  Atlantic and Gulf Coast beaches, I was told by someone on the beach that they have nests under the boardwalk.

The name Oystercatcher was coined by Mark Catesby in 1731 as a common name for the North American species described as eating oysters. In 1843 this name was established as the preferred term, replacing the older name sea pie.

Collage

Photo Collages are one of my favorite things to make. Years ago my friends and I would cut photos and words about one another out of magazines and glue them on poster board. These days different apps make it easy to combine photos-like this one I put together of selfies of me and my husband on our outings.

Bury

While walking on the beach at sunrise last summer, I saw a dog digging furiously in the sand. The size of the hole he was creating was quite deep. I asked the woman he was with what he was digging for, and she said, “oh you’ll see.” Sure enough he unearthed a large piece of wood which the woman told me he had buried there the day before. I didn’t ask how he knew the spot where it was, I just enjoyed seeing his look of satisfaction as he sat there taking in the sunrise after a job well done. They’re not called Retrievers for nothing.

Cee’s Which Way

I received so many positive comments about the Timber Arch Suspension Bridge I posted as part of the Bridge Photo Challenge that I decided to use it for my which way this week. I usually drive over it to get to the park, but today I walked across it and captured a few different views and ways.

Yes I stood in the middle of the road to capture this shot
