June Photo A Day Challenge

For the last day of June, the theme is Goodbye June. What a month it has been. I said good bye to the school I have worked in for eight years, good bye to many of the people I have known there, good bye to the kids I have seen grow over the years.

The beginning of June my husband and I headed down to the NJ shore to stay overnight. It was very cold- only in the 50’s, which was highly unusual for June, but we didn’t care- we walked and took in the familiar sites, and I saw the sunrise over the ocean. A week later we headed down just for the day- the weather was beautiful and I had plenty of personal days left, so off we went. Our first “official” day at the beach.

Sundays we visited some interesting places, short drives from home but took us to farmland that made us feel like we were much farther away than we were. We spent a Sunday afternoon relaxing at a park and taking photos of the fearless Sparrows that came to eat the crumbs I threw their way.

The sky turning light early allowed me to start running in the mornings again. I bought myself a new pair of sneakers- tie dye- that make me smile everytime I put them on.

A friend of mine who has a shop on Etsy asked me if I’d be interested in joining her in making bracelets for the site., which I gladly accepted. We meet one evening a week to make jewelry and catch up. Her daughter graduated from high school in June and invited me to attend “Senior Night”- an evening when the teachers speak about each girl in the graduating class. I was touched that she asked me to come, and found it to be a moving evening hearing the personal impression given by different teachers about each student.

The last day of school a friend picked me up after school and we went to visit another favorite place of mine, Wave Hill Gardens, in Riverdale, NY. It was a beautiful day and helped to wash away the melancholy I had been feeling all day. So that was June…. now on to July!

Sunday Stills: Tourist

I haven’t traveled in many years as I don’t like to fly. However, that doesn’t stop me and my husband from taking day trips every Sunday to visit places within a few hours car drive away, where we become tourists. Here are a few of the places we have visited

Greenhouse roofs. We drove through farmland yesterday and spotted these along the roads.

The Tent Homes of Ocean Grove. Each of the tent homes is constructed on a wooden platform. The largest is about 13 feet by 18 feet, with a canvas section attached to a permanent wooden structure housing the kitchen and bathroom. In front of the canvas section, there is a narrow porch, often covered by an awning and sporting an American flag. You can read an article about them Here.   or here.

Nurturing Thursday

Today was my last day of school. Not only for the year, but for good in the school I have worked in for eight  years. I have taken a job in another school for next year. My leaving came about as the result of a meeting I had back in March with an administrator, which completely undermined my ability to continue working there, while also showing me that my dedication and work ethic and ultimately me- meant nothing to him. I had no value. And so I chose to look around and see what other opportunities were out there, though at my age change is not an easy thing. There is comfort in knowing your routine, what to expect, how things run. In this case moving out of the comfort zone was empowering. Moving away from a person who through his actions had no issue with letting me know how worthless I was to him, just fed the fire to get away. Motivated me to move, to get out of there.

I look forward to a new beginning, to hopefully a positive experience, to become re energized by the newness of it all- for that new hello.

A slanted roof on a water tower disguised as a lighthouse. There is another flat roof below, which upon closer inspection has something on it.

Sunday Stills: Twins

These identical twins (my cousins) did not plan on wearing the same color shirt this day (one v neck, the other crew) but did, and did not realize they were standing the same way with one leg propped up against the wall until after they saw the photograph. Twins in mind, not just appearance.

Here’s a roof at Grounds for Sculpture in New Jersey. Home of the many sculptures of Seward Johnson. I wrote about my visit to this wonderful place here

On our recent trip to Ocean Grove NJ, the room we stayed in was on the 4th floor of an old Inn. We were able to see the ocean a block away. I loved looking out and being at eye level with the roofs of the other houses, feeling like I was up in the clouds. A beautiful view.

One Word Sunday: Music

Debbie over at Travel With Intent blog has a One Word Sunday Challenge and her topic this week is: Music

My husband took up the violin three years ago. Every year the teacher holds a recital for her students. They all come to play, showing off what they have mastered, to their parents and family members. My husband has never participated in the recitals – he gets too nervous playing in front of people other than me, and his line is always”my mother isn’t coming.” This year there are two other adult beginners also taking lessons, and seeing as there is safety in numbers, and with the teacher’s urging, my husband agreed to play with them in the recital, which took place last week.

Here they are playing Ode To Joy. I’m sure his mother would be proud.
