The reflection of the late afternoon sun on the water- shiny like diamonds glistening.

I love Eucalyptus. The way it looks, the way it smells. It adds a little spikiness to an ordinary bouquet.

A Dragonfly atop a spiky branch with some spiky spider webs…say that three times fast!!

This bench faces my favorite pond. It is at the far end, reached after walking halfway around. I walked there on Friday, and found it still covered with Monday’s snow, so no sitting this week. Spring is coming and I look forward to sitting there once again.

Spiky snow laden trees in the morning sunrise. Mr. Red Wing Blackbird likes watching the sunrise too.

I took a walk after school today to my favorite local pond. The temps here are below average for this time of year and we had 8 inches of snow Monday. As a result of the temps being so cold the snow is not melting, and where it is melting there was a lot of mud around the pond. I heard the Red Wing Blackbirds calling, and spotted a female Cardinal high up in a tree. Then I saw movement out of the corner of my eye and turned just in time to catch a Great Blue Heron in flight. It made my day!

This evergreen is just spiky enough to serve as a good lookout for Mr. Mockingbird.

I attended an interesting lecture about owls, that offered the opportunity to dissect an owl pellet. Owls swallow their prey whole or in large pieces, but they cannot digest fur, teeth, bones, or feathers. The things that cannot be digested are compacted into a pellet which the owl regurgitates.
The pellet-ready for dissection

The inside of the opened pellet

The skull of the victim. I was told this was most likely a bird

This Stilt Sandpiper sure has some spiky legs! All the better for running in the surf to find something to eat!

What’s the first thing you notice about a person?
Their teeth. I don’t think people realize how important teeth are to how they look. A smile exposing rotted teeth just makes me want to run away. Brown, yellowed teeth age a person something awful.
What three habits do you feel would improve someone’s life?
Getting into that habit of beginning the day with a positive attitude. Getting in the habit of not complaining. Getting enough sleep.
What takes up too much of your time? Would you stop that if you could?
Going to work. It leaves me less time for blogging, taking photos of birds, and going on nature walks. I would definitely stop if I could, but those bills keep on coming and need to get paid! I manage to squeeze in meeting friends for coffee during the week after work, and the blogging and birds, but would like more hours in the day to do so.
Cookies (biscuits to those elsewhere), pastries, pie or cake? If not, what does your sweet tooth crave?
None of the above. I became gluten intolerant about 18 years ago- long before anyone had heard of it. Gluten free cakes and cookies are loaded with sugar and fat and do not taste worth taking in the extra calories. Back in the day I was always drawn to a delicious piece of cake with icing. I will indulge in a piece of chocolate for my sweet tooth now and then.
Gratitude? Are You Happy? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes and yes. Thankful everyday. For my husband, my friends, and the wonderful team of teachers I work with.

The spiky spire atop the Freedom Tower in New York City. The 408-foot spire, which weighs 758 tons, includes a broadcast antenna and a light that is visible from miles away to serve as a both a beacon for aircraft and a permanent signal of triumph over extremists who jolted the city and the country.

Spiky Flowers….
It was snowing something fierce Friday morning, leaving a little more than an inch on the ground and streets. I made sure to put out bird seed for my feathered friends. I looked out about 5 minutes later and saw the Grackles had descended. It was quite something to see just how many had arrived. The Blue Jays and Cardinals came too, skirting around them, but managing to eat as well. More snow expected tonight, this time up to 8 inches. Let’s see who shows up tomorrow!
I spotted this bench at a Nature Preserve, situated outside the exit doors.
It wasn’t until I came closer to it that I realized on the right side (facing me)was the profile of woman’s head carved into the wood and a cat. The left side must also have had one but it had broken off.
On the left side is a hand holding a book – carved from the wood
With a lovely sentiment to someone who had worked there

This week’s theme is Harmony/Melody. So many to choose from.
A personal favorite. Two of my favorite artists, singing in harmony together. They were married at the time.
Rock. So many meanings.
The solid mineral material forming part of the surface of the earth and other similar planets
Used to refer to someone or something that is extremely strong, reliable, or hard
Used to defeat scissors in a game
A rock is also a diamond or other jewel
If an alcoholic drink is on the rocks, it is served with ice
To move something or cause something to move backward and forward or from side to side
These 3 songs popped into my head when I read the word Rock- so I’ll share them here. Rock on, my friends.
