Spring in Winter

This past weekend the area I live in received a welcome warm up. What it says about the fate of the world and global warming is a bit frightening to think of, as the temperatures reached close to 70 degrees. It is January. The average temps are usually in the 30’s and 40’s- or even lower. I could not see wasting the opportunity to enjoy what the day was offering by staying indoors and doing laundry. I headed out to different areas, walked miles, and took in the warmth.

Morning at my favorite pond.

Then to a local park with paved walkways and beautiful views

I headed back to a local trail in my town to see if I could spot the owl who has taken up residence there. He was there… if you looked very closely.

I met an adorable Silky Terrier named Swan, who was so sweet and friendly

And spotted a bird I had never seen before- A Fox Sparrow!

The sun in a Western sky, the ending of a spectacular day.

January Squares

For Becky’s #January Light Squares I’ve chosen a Traffic Light today. This traffic light is located on the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel in NYC, as the lanes are switched between in going and outgoing traffic depending upon the time of day. There are three vehicular tubes of varying lengths, with two traffic lanes in each tube. The center tube contains reversible lanes, while the northern and southern tubes exclusively carry westbound and eastbound traffic, respectively.

Cee’s B &W Photo Challenge: Moving Water

The ocean at the New Jersey shore is usually calm, with small rolling waves. On the day these photos were taken, the area had experienced a heavy storm days before, and a hurricane somewhere along the east coast. As a result, the waves at the beach that day were mammoth. The seas roiling with fury. A great day for surfers who rarely had the opportunity to surf waves like these. Water in motion….

Tuesday Photo Challenge:Portal

Frank invites us to share our take on Portal this week.

I grew up across the street from an underpass that allowed us to walk under the railroad tracks that ran above it. As children we were loathe to have to use it. It was damp and dank and stunk, often littered with empty liquor bottles. It was easier to run across the tracks, or wait if a train was approaching and watch it until it passed, feeling the breeze it made as it rushed by, warm against our faces.  By the time I was in my 20’s, a fence had been installed, no longer allowing one to cross the tracks at all. The town cleaned up the underpass in recent years. (somewhat)  A portal leading from one side to another, with a world above it.

Made it!

A Photo a Week Challenge: Opposite Weather

This week Nancy invites us to share a photo of “WEATHER THAT IS OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU ARE EXPERIENCING RIGHT NOW.”

Oh, it will be my pleasure to do so. Here in the Northeast of the United States it is winter. We have been fortunate that the temperatures have not been crazy cold, or at least not for days on end, and we have even had some pretty mild weather. It is still winter though. I live for summer, for the days at the beach, for the warmth of the early rising sun. I am happy to share some of my photos from summer and those warm weather days.

Cee’s Black & White Photo Challenge: Items with two M’s

Commuted

I commuted into New York City for close to 30 years for work. It added an extra few hours to my work day, having to drive to the bus stop in town, then sit on the bus for anywhere between 45 minutes and 2 hours depending upon traffic. Arriving in NY at the Port Authority I would then make a 15 minute walk to work, and in later years have to take 2 buses across town and then uptown. I can’t say I miss those days, as now my commute is an 8 minute drive to work.

I took the photos of people on the bus that was moving -barely- as I sat on my bus crawling in traffic on the way home.

Ticket purchases before boarding the bus

The ascent to the bus platform in Port Authority

Going through the Lincoln Tunnel the reflection of the person in front of me on his cell phone made for an interesting capture.

Tuesday Photo Challenge: Common

The Common Yellowthroated Warbler is anything but common in my book. His black mask makes him stand out in a crowd.

According to the Audubon Guide for birds: “Abundant and well-known, the Common Yellowthroat has succeeded by being a nonconformist. As the only one of our warblers that will nest in open marshes, it is found in practically every reed-bed and patch of cattails from coast to coast. Although it sometimes hides in the marsh, its low rough callnote will reveal its presence. The male often perches atop a tall stalk to rap out his distinctive song, wichity-wichity-wichity.”

They are fast and as a result I have found hard to photograph, but this one I spied sitting outside my kitchen window and sat long enough for me to get a shot.

Here is his call thanks to Martyn Stewart

Tuesday Photo Challenge: Mist

This week Frank invites us to share photos of Mist. He says mist is more than just a fog, as it can also be a gentle, diffuse rain, which can provide very interesting light play.

I entered one of my favorite local trails last January, and saw mist rising from the creek, playing off the early morning light. It was a mild winter morning which combined with the cold creek caused the mist to form. It was beautiful to see, and I attempted to capture it with my camera. It appears as a light gray suspended over the creek in my photos.

Sunday Stills: #Peace

Terri invites us to share our take on the word peace this week. I always find peace when surrounded by nature. On the day I took this photo I was focused on capturing a shot of the Great Blue Heron in the foreground of this photo when I suddenly realized there was another Great Blue standing in the background. Quite an exciting moment!
