The Cosmic Photo Challenge: North, South, East, West

The sign says 95 South but in truth we will be heading East as we cross the GW Bridge

Heading West on Route 80 to exit North to Allamuchy, NJ

When I see the sign for Shore Points I know I’m halfway there…and Exit 105 means I’m 15 minutes out

Heading West out of the Starbucks parking lot

And a look at at a local highway from above, moving West on the left, and east on the right

Sunday Stills: Sum, Sum #Summertime

“Summertime is always the best of what might be.” ~Charles Bowden

This week, Terri says to share our ideal summertime activities, wishes, projects, or anything that makes summer memorable or special for you.

As anyone who frequents my blog knows, summer is my favorite season. School is out, I love the warmer weather and I LOVE the beach. Having no real schedule allows me to go running in the morning, go bird watching, or sit in the backyard and read and watch the birds. Stay overnight at the beach and catch the sunrise. And drink lots of iced coffee.

In case you’re wondering why I have selfies of me drinking coffee, I have a whatsapp chat with two friends who are also major coffee drinkers to keep in touch. We got in the habit of sending pics of the coffee we’re drinking when we send a message. Middle photo was taken on a morning run, I forgot my water so a mile in I was close enough to a Dunkin Donuts to mobile order and made a pit stop! (No contacts in that morning)

And a look back to summers past…

Lens Artists Challenge: Picking Favourites

This week we are asked: How good are you at being self-critical when it comes to your photography? Can you easily pick out the best of your shots and are you comfortable rejecting those that have been less successful? Pick out three (just three!) that stand out as particular favourites. Choose three from different genres please, but those genres are up to you: macro, wildlife, street, landscape, architecture. Anything goes, but each must be an image you are proud of.

I will delete photos I have taken that I consider not to be “up to par” but still manage to keep far too many anyway. Sometimes I am totally surprised by a photo that I have uploaded to my computer which is far more beautiful than I had imagined it would be.

I took this photograph in early March as I walked along the beach at sunrise. It was taken with my cell phone, and I kept taking photos as the gulls flew by not sure what I would actually capture. I loved the composition of this photo, the sun peeking up behind the rocks, the gulls captured mid flight across the skyline, the waves hitting the rocks as they rolled in.

I was visiting a pond a mile from my home on a day when I unexpectedly encountered a large group of Tree Swallows flying around. I had just begun photographing birds and was using an old very basic camera. Many of the birds would alight on a dead branch hanging over the pond affording me the opportunity to take a picture. Though taken back in 2016 it is still one of my favorite captures, and one I am proud of. The position of the two birds, the bokeh effect that occurred in the background giving contrast to the birds and making them standout I just loved.

This is one of my very favorite photographs. Taken early morning as I stood on a walking overpass above the train tracks. I have not altered the original in any way- you can see the early morning mist as it rises, along with barely a shadow of the sun that has just risen in the East, on the right side of the photo. I love the vanishing point in the distance. An interesting vantage point to be able to stand above a traveling train.

Friendly Friday Challenge: Favorites & Why

“For this week’s Friendly Friday Challenge, Sandy asks us to share a photo and tell us the backstory. What makes the photo special? Why is it a favorite? Is there a story behind the picture? Is it an enhanced or modified picture? What did you do to change it and why?”

October 2020. School was in session, with masks, and shields and fear everyday of catching Covid. Endless handwashing, not getting too close to the kids, showering the minute I got home. I decided to take a day off from the madness and my husband and I drove to Sandy Hook, NJ about an hours drive away. The beach, the quiet of October, no one around on what was a gray and chilly day. Whenever I see this photo I am reminded of that feeling of freedom from what was going on in the world, in my daily life. I changed it from color to black and white which made the photo itself more “still”

Running away seems to be a common theme for me and my favorite photos… fast forward to October 2021, I went by myself overnight to the Inn at the beach where we always stay. (read about it HERE.) I remember sending one of the teachers I work with the photo of the Starbucks I was holding as I stood on the balcony outside my room, immediately after I arrived, looking at the ocean feeling total contentment. One of the other photos is of daybreak from the balcony, total quiet as the horizon changed color, and the other I took on my morning run through Asbury Park, I remember sitting watching the sun come up, once again enjoying the stillness of morning. When I see these photos I am always reminded of that sense of calm, in a place I so love.

While walking a trail a mile from my home, I looked up to find myself standing under a tree where a bald eagle had perched. My heart nearly stopped. He didn’t move as I stood beneath him snapping away, marveling at such a fortunate encounter. To see this magnificent bird, up close, every feather, was a more than memorable moment for someone who grew up at a time when bald eagles were extinct.

The original selfie, circa 1980’s. My BFF and I were spending the weekend visiting my grandfather who lived near the beach, and had gone to the beach for the day. Laughing as we always were, we had the genius idea of taking my Polaroid camera and turning it around to face us so we could capture the moment. And there you have it. We thought it was the most hysterical thing to do (who knew that 20 years later selfies would be a “thing.”) The wind blowing our hair, the color totally off and faded, but the moment captured nevertheless. I smile every time I come upon this photo.

Last On the Card

My last day of the month we spent the morning at our favorite garden, took a two mile walk in the afternoon and then stopped off at a local supermarket. Moments captured with my Nikon and Samsung Note 9.
